Balky Senate Witness Sent to Jail

WASHINGTON — Disbarred lawyer William Borders turned himself in to U.S. marshals today, three days after a judge ordered him incarcerated for refusing to answer a senator’s questions in the impeachment case against federal Judge Alcee Hastings.
The U.S. Marshal’s office said Borders will serve his time at the Federal Correctional Institution at Petersburg, Va.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ordered Borders incarcerated Tuesday after holding the lawyer in civil contempt of court at the Senate’s request.
The order would permit Borders to purge himself of contempt and get out of jail by answering the Senate impeachment committee’s questions.
