Part of Freeway Buckled by Fire in N.Y. Reopened

NEWARK, N. J. — Part of an interstate highway used by tens of thousands of New York City-bound commuters was reopened Wednesday more than a week after a fire in a pile of rubbish caused the road to buckle.
Four lanes of 10-lane Interstate 78 were opened to traffic before rush hour, authorities said.
Three elevated sections of the road were seriously damaged on Aug. 7 when debris piled beneath the highway caught fire, warping support beams. Engineers salvaged a fourth elevated section with $385,000 in emergency repairs.
