ON THE SIDELINES : Swede Skier Wins World Cup Race

THREDBO, Australia — Swede Lars-Boerje Eriksson conquered an injured right ankle and some of the biggest names in skiing today to win the opening World Cup giant slalom race of the 1989-90 season at this Australian resort.
Eriksson, 22, produced a scorching second run to improve from 11th after the first run, putting out of his mind the recurring ankle injury that prevented him from training in the two days leading up to the race.
