P.M. BRIEFING : KAL to Pay Victims’ Kin $195,000

SEOUL, South Korea — Korean Air Lines agreed today to pay $195,000 in compensation to relatives of each of the 65 South Korean passengers killed when its DC-10 crashed in Libya last month, an airline spokesman said.

He said the sum is made up of $130,000 in insurance payments and $65,000 in additional “condolence payments.” KAL will also finance the education of all the children of the South Korean victims through college, he said.

The DC-10 carrying 199 people, mostly workers from South Korean firms involved in Libyan construction projects, crashed July 27 as the pilot tried to land in dense fog at Tripoli airport after a flight from Seoul.

The spokesman said KAL will negotiate compensation payments for the families of four Korean crew members and five foreign passengers--four Libyans and a Japanese--who also died.
