Airman Finds Bomb Near Lancaster Base

A team of military explosives experts was en route to Edwards Air Force Base north of Lancaster late Friday to defuse a 100-pound bomb that was found in the desert just south of the base, authorities said.
An off-duty airman found the bomb shortly after noon Friday while motorcycling near the base’s south gate, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Kennedy said.
“It was a pretty big boomer,” Kennedy said.
No person or residence was threatened because the bomb was found in an isolated area, Kennedy said. No evacuations were necessary, he said.
Officials did not know how old the bomb was or how it ended up in the desert near the air base, Kennedy said.
Deputies were guarding the area until demolition experts arrived, Kennedy said.
