SAN SALVADOR — El Salvador’s leftist rebels said they played no role in the assassination last week of Presidency Minister Jose Antonio Rodriguez Porth.
“As a result of investigations, we confirm the FMLN bears no responsibility for the attack against Rodriguez,” a rebel communique released late Thursday said.
Rodriguez, who had taken office June 1 along with the right-wing government headed by President Alfredo Cristiani, was gunned down along with two aides outside his San Salvador home last week. Government and military officials said they suspected the rebels of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) were responsible.
