BONN — Chancellor Helmut Kohl today countered suggestions of a possible U.S. troop pullout from West Germany with a reminder that the American troops here also defend U.S. security interests.
Kohl, whose call for early East-West talks on cutting short-range nuclear arms sparked a discussion about the future of the 320,000 U.S. troops here, said there is no reason for concern.
The chancellor was reacting to comments by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, who said Sunday in a television interview that he could not foresee Washington keeping its troops in West Germany unless they were backed by short-range nuclear missiles.
