DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Ken Schrader and Terry Labonte won today’s Daytona Twin 125-mile qualifying races, with Schrader escaping trouble in the crash-marred opener and Labonte setting a speed record in the uneventful second race. Labonte, whose team switched from Chevrolet to Ford this season, took the lead with six laps left in the 50-mile nightcap and cruised to victory by 9.21 seconds over runner-up Sterling Marlin.
Labonte and Marlin were the only drivers to go all the way without stopping for gas. Marlin coasted across the finish line out of gas after running out in the fourth turn of the last lap and Labonte ran out on the cool-down lap.
The winner of each of the qualifying races earns $30,000.
