Cathedral 55, El Segundo 53--El Segundo squandered a 16-point second-half lead and the Cathedral Phantoms hit two free throws with nine seconds remaining to beat the Eagles in front of a frenzied crowd at Cathedral’s Brother Bertram Gym in Los Angeles.
The Eagles finish the regular season 13-10 overall, 9-3 in Santa Fe League play. They will finish either tied for second with Cantwell or in third place, depending on the outcome of the Cantwell-Cathedral game Friday. Cathedral won its second consecutive league title with Wednesday’s victory.
El Segundo led, 45-29, with four minutes remaining in the third period but was outscored, 26-8, in the last 12 minutes, including 13-6 in the fourth quarter.
Cathedral’s Michael Orozco tied the score at 51 with a layup and then gave the Phantoms their first lead of the game at 1:31, 53-51, with another layup. Shawn Foster, who led all scorers with 22 points, tied the game with 30 seconds left. The Eagles regained possession on a turnover but gave the ball back on a missed free throw. Louis Fuentes was fouled with nine seconds to go and made both free throws in the one-and-one to give the Phantoms the victory.
