A new navigational device for arriving aircraft has been added at John Wayne Airport, officials have announced.
The Localizer Direction Aid replaces the old Very-High Frequency Omni Range radio approach to the airport. The previous device had been shut down by the Federal Aviation Administration in 1987 because of interference caused by high-rise buildings in the area.
The LDA’s signal is not affected by existing high-rise construction and will duplicate the Omni approach pattern, which routes aircraft over parts of Orange, Villa Park and the Costa Mesa Freeway, according to the airport.
