Guidry Becomes a Free Agent After Yankees Reject Him

Pitcher Ron Guidry, the last remaining player from the New York Yankees’ 1977-78 World Series championship teams, became a free agent Tuesday when the team did not offer him a contract for next season.
Guidry could be invited to spring training as a non-roster player by Manager Dallas Green.
Guidry, 38, a left-hander, could not be reached for comment. His agent, Reggie Ringuet, said that Guidry wanted to remain with the Yankees and that he might accept a spring training invitation.
Guidry, who did not pitch until July last season because of rotator-cuff surgery in December, 1987, was 2-3 with a 4.18 earned-run average.
