BOGOTA, Colombia — Sixteen people were killed and 11 severely burned when an interstate bus caught fire after the driver tried to clean the carburetor with gasoline, Colombia’s highway patrol said Tuesday.
The accident occurred Monday night near the town of Socha, about 140 miles northeast of Bogota. The patrol said the bus had stalled and the driver was pouring gasoline into the carburetor when the fuel ignited. The fire spread quickly near the door of the bus, blocking the passengers’ escape, it said.
