DETROIT — A Chrysler Corp. subsidiary says it will lay off 500 workers at Detroit Trim, one of four Acustar Inc. plants that the United Auto Workers union agreed to allow to close in its contract with Chrysler.
The workers’ last day will be Dec. 23, which is when production is scheduled to end, company and union officials said Monday. The plant makes seat covers and other soft automotive trim.
The plant employed 1,064 people when the closing was announced, and about 800 employees are still working. The workers remaining after Dec. 23 will be laid off March 3, Chrysler and UAW officials said.
All Detroit Trim workers will be eligible for the Chrysler-UAW job bank and will continue to receive full paychecks and benefits until they find other jobs within Chrysler.
