The government of Argentine President Raul Alfonsin plans to grant a 20% pay boost and a $100 one-time bonus to the armed forces after a four-day rebellion in which insubordinate officers demanded higher salaries and other concessions, Defense Ministry sources said. The sources said the pay raise will come in two parts this month. A Defense Ministry official, however, said the raises were “under consideration as from two months ago.” He said the increases will “also benefit civilians.” The short-lived insurrection involved little fighting, but two civilians and a police officer were killed.
