Crime-Stopper Tips for Travelers

NEW YORK — The Christmas-New Year’s holiday period matches summer for incidents of travel crime, according to American Express.
The firm says its 1988 travel crime and safety survey of airport security managers shows that older, foreign and affluent-looking travelers are the most frequent targets of travel crime, which often involves wallet or purse snatchings, or luggage theft by pickpockets or thieves at airports.
Security experts offer these tips for preventing thefts while traveling this holiday season:
--Never leave your bags unattended.
--Men should not carry their wallets in their back pockets.
--Women should carry handbags with the flap turned toward the body and against the hip, or in front where they can always see them.
--Travelers should push baggage carts in front of them rather than pull them behind, to keep their belongings in sight.
