East Roundup : Boston College Gets Irish Up and Upsets Army

From Associated Press

In the first-ever American football game in Ireland, Ed Toner scored 3 touchdowns on 1-yard runs in the second half as Boston College upset Army, 38-24, Saturday before an enthusiastic 42,525 in Lansdowne Road, a rugby stadium in Dublin.

Army, which will play Alabama in the Sun Bowl, never led in falling to 8-2. Boston College (3-7) snapped a 4-game losing streak.

Mike Sanders scored the Eagles’ first touchdown on a 53-yard run in the first quarter. Quarterback Mark Kamphus, who missed the last 5 games because of a broken jaw, scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter, and Toner added his 3 short-yardage scores, the last with 6:21 remaining.

The Emerald Isle Classic, the name given to the second college football game played in Europe, attracted 10,000 Bostonians, including Sen. Ted Kennedy. The fans cheered loudly, enjoyed a lot of pageantry and even did the wave.

“The atmosphere charged our people up,” Boston College Coach Jack Bicknell said. “I thought the atmosphere was electrifying. The environment was great. They didn’t always know when to cheer, but they were cheering.”

Cornell 19, Pennsylvania 6--Trailing 6-3, the Big Red rallied for 16 points in the fourth quarter at Ithaca, N.Y., to win a share of its first Ivy League championship in 17 seasons.
