PONTIAC, Mich. — Detroit Lions coach Darryl Rogers was fired late Sunday, following the team’s 23-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs, and replaced on an interim basis by defensive coordinator Wayne Fontes, sources close to the team told the Associated Press.
The sources, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the formal announcement of the move would be made today at the team’s regular weekly news conference.
Bill Keenist, the Lions public relations director, said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.
The 53-year-old Rogers, in his fourth season with the Lions, has an 18-40 record in three-plus seasons with the Lions.
Rogers was unavailable for comment.
