A new California Transplant Donor Network hopes to end years of competition in Northern California for hearts, kidneys, livers and lungs needed by desperately ill patients. In recent years as more and more hospitals established transplant centers, rival services competed to get emergency staffs in outlying areas to contact them first if they had a patient who was “brain dead” and had healthy organs available. The new San Francisco-based network, part of a national system administered in Richmond, Va., will direct organs to the patients most in need. Five major San Francisco Bay Area hospitals are participating.
