Abolishing the Death Penalty
George Bush favors a mandatory death penalty for murder, while Michael Dukakis opposes it. And Bush is proud to be in the mainstream of American opinion on this subject.
But not in the mainstream of world opinion. These are countries which have abolished capital punishment: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Finland, West Germany, Honduras, Iceland, India, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela.
We do have company, though, in this “tough” approach to crime. Our comrades are those stalwarts of respect for human rights, like China, South Africa, and the Soviet Union.
