First Lady Marks First Year Since Cancer Surgery

WASHINGTON — First Lady Nancy Reagan marked the one-year anniversary of her breast cancer surgery Monday in apparent good health, though she said she “will feel better after I get my checkup.”

Women who have had breast cancer are at increased risk of suffering the disease again and usually are encouraged to undergo yearly mammogram screening. Mrs. Reagan, who already was being screened yearly, had a clean mammogram six months after her surgery, removal of the left breast.

The First Lady’s cancer was caught early in a routine mammogram and she said she did not undergo any follow-up hormone or chemotherapy. Other than the normal anxiety most cancer survivors harbor about a recurrence, Mrs. Reagan said she feels fine: “I feel the same as I did before.”
