A former Philippine air force colonel, arrested for his role in a coup attempt against President Corazon Aquino, was shot and killed while trying to escape from a military prison. Officials said Lt. Col. Francisco Baula died at a military hospital after guards at Manila’s Camp Crame stockade shot him when he refused to halt. Baula was arrested earlier this month in connection with the August, 1987, coup attempt led by former Lt. Col. Gregorio (Gringo) Honasan.
