Management of the New Haven (Conn.) Symphony Orchestra canceled the orchestra’s Tuesday night opening concert because of a musicians’ strike. Members of Local 234 of the American Federation of Musicians had voted 50-2 Sunday to go on strike after failure to reach agreement on a new contract providing higher wages. The strike forced management to cancel Tuesday night’s concert at Yale’s Woolsey Hall under guest director Lawrence Leighton Smith. The strike is the second for a major symphony orchestra in Connecticut: Members of Musicians’ Local 400 voted to strike the Hartford Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 23 in a similar dispute over wages.
