Navy Planes

The Times article buried on page 29 (Part I, Sept. 23) reported the loss of a U.S. Navy F-14 fighter, the third to go down in 11 days.
The most startling fact is that it was the 100th F-14 plane lost and I assume that all were lost on routine training missions. Let alone the loss of crewmen, the cost of each aircraft is $40 million--the total, a staggering $40 billion!
It’s enough to shake my confidence in the ability of our military to maintain these planes in peacetime and God forbid if and when we must call upon them to defend this country in any war short of “Star Wars!”
