Yugoslav Protesters Demand Firing of Local Party Leaders

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — Thousands of protesters surrounded the regional parliament in Yugoslavia’s southern republic of Montenegro on Friday, refusing to leave until local Communist Party leaders resigned, Tanjug news agency said.
On Thursday 100,000 protesters forced the entire party leadership of Vojvodina province to resign after a siege of party headquarters.
Other protests erupted on Friday as almost 200,000 people rallied in three Serbian towns backing Serbian Communist Party leader Slobodan Milosevic’s drive to reduce the autonomy of Serbia’s two provinces, Kosovo and Vojvodina.
The protests began last summer, led by Serbs who accuse Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians of persecuting Kosovo’s Serbs and seeking to join Kosovo to neighboring Albania. Since then, the protests have broadened, attacking the entire Yugoslav political Establishment.
