The energy incentive program of the Los Angeles Unified School District is one of five programs nationwide given a special award by the U.S. Department of Energy, California Energy Commission Chairman Charles R. Imbrecht announced.
Since 1976, the district’s 818 schools have been able to save $85 million on energy costs in projects ranging from revising lamp purchasing procedures to installing timer switches on heaters and air-conditioning units, officials said. The district’s program, which in June received the California Energy Commission’s 1988 Energy Innovation Award, teaches staff and students at every school ways to conserve energy.
One innovation is an “energy-free” hour at each school. After one week of lessons on energy, an entire school turns off heating, cooling and lights for one hour.
