NEW YORK — Six-time champion Chris Evert easily won her base-line duel with 16-year-old Conchita Martinez of Spain today, triumphing 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the U.S. Open. Despite being more than twice the age of her opponent, Evert, 33, was the fans’ favorite. “The crowd makes it the tournament that it is,” she said. “They really support the Americans and they really support the older Americans.”
Andre Agassi, the men’s fourth seed, overcame first-match jitters to defeat qualifier Philip Johnson 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-3.
