American Stores reported that earnings fell 17% to $30.3 million in the second quarter ended July 17 from the year-ago period. The Salt Lake City-based supermarket and pharmacy operator noted that if costs related to the acquisition of Lucky Stores were excluded, the gain would have been 37.8%. American also operates Acme Markets, Skaggs Alpha Beta/Buttrey Food Stores and Alpha Beta Co. as well as Osco Drug Inc.
