Wreckage from a downed single-engine plane, which had taken off from Van Nuys Airport, was discovered near a Mojave Desert area called Robber’s Roost, so remote that rescue workers had to hike to the crash site to recover the pilot’s body.
The shattered Mooney aircraft was found late Thursday after a Civil Air Patrol search team spotted the wreckage, said Kern County Deputy Sheriff Richard Dixon.
The dead pilot, Lawrence Bolens, 45, of Los Angeles, is thought to have been the only person aboard, Dixon said.
The plane left Van Nuys Airport on Tuesday night bound for the Mammoth area and was reported missing six hours later, Dixon said.
