No-Fault Initiative
Your Aug. 5 editorial “The Other Traffic Jam” does not address one major factor responsible for overcrowded court calendars: abuse of our legal system by some attorneys who represent victims of minor auto accidents. In 1986 lawsuits filed for auto accidents in Los Angeles County increased 47%.
The solution to this aspect of the problem is passage of Proposition 104, the no-fault initiative. Proposition 104 would have eliminated about 90% of the personal injury liability claims filed in 1986. The no-fault initiative would certainly address the issue of an overworked judicial system, not to mention the ultimate reduction in the cost of auto insurance for millions of California drivers.
