Mario and Celia Jimenez of Whittier have been honored at the White House as one of the nation’s great American families.
The couple were one of six families given the award by First Lady Nancy Reagan for community service and family commitment, said Evelyn Leyva of the Hispanic-American Family of the Year Foundation.
The Jimenez family, Leyva said, are immigrants from Mexico who have raised money to assist poor people in their native country and in their Whittier community. They own a restaurant, Mario’s Tacos, in Pico Rivera and are the parents of five children.
