Fund Is Started for City Clerk in Harassment Case

A fund has been established to help pay the legal expenses of Fillmore’s city clerk, one of three Fillmore employees who have filed complaints against City Manager Stanley Greene for alleged sexual harassment.

The Soroptimist Club, a women’s service organization in Fillmore, this week established an account on behalf of Noreen Withers at the Fillmore branch of the Security Pacific Bank, club member Marie Wren told the Fillmore City Council on Tuesday night.

Wren objected to the city’s footing the bill for Greene’s legal expenses without also taking care of Withers, who is a fellow Soroptimist.

“I feel you are protecting one person’s legal rights without protecting all persons’ legal rights,” she said.

An attorney for the other two employees, Barbara Adams and Linda Nash, has been provided by their union, Local 501 of the Operating Engineers.

Greene’s contract with the city stipulates that the city pay for his representation in job-related litigation. Greene, 52, was appointed city manager in June at an annual salary of $63,000.

Wren also read a letter from the Soroptimists calling for the council to “conduct a serious investigation into charges lodged by City Hall employees as an indication that the council will not tolerate sexual harassment in the workplace.”

The council has asked an administrative law judge to hear the case, but a hearing has not yet been scheduled.
