Pact in New Orleans Averts Transit Strike During Convention

NEW ORLEANS — The city’s bus and streetcar drivers reached tentative agreement on a 3-year contract, averting a strike a week before the Republican National Convention.
Federal mediator Andre Joyce said the bargaining committee of the Amalgamated Transit Union and the Regional Transit Authority negotiated the pact at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, 2 1/2 hours before a strike deadline.
Details of the pact were not released.
The contract was expected to be presented to the membership today for ratification.
One of the major sticking points of the negotiations was health insurance premiums, which jumped from less than $10 a week to $45 a week for family coverage effective July 1.
