Virginia Slims Tournament Begins Today

The $100,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego tennis tournament begins today and continues through Saturday at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club. Former Stanford University star, Patty Fendick, is top-seeded.
The tournament will also showcase the return of Tracy Austin, who hasn’t played in a sanctioned event in five years. Austin will play in the doubles tournament with Robin White of Del Mar.
BASKETBALL
Former Grossmont High School star Kerry McIntyre scored 22 points to lead Unpretentious to a 104-96 win over Understanding in the men’s division of the Supreme Court Basketball League at Memorial Recreation Center.
With the win, Unpretentious (4-2) moved into a three-way tie for second place. Deshang Weaver scored 39 for Understanding.
Also in men’s play, Good Judgement, despite an outstanding effort from University of San Diego center Dondi Bell, fell to 0-6, as Pius Players, behind 27 points from Shawn Hicks, won 91-79. Bell had 20 points, 19 rebounds and 8 blocks.
In women’s play, U.S. International guard Yvonne Sanchez scored 19 points for Everlasting in a 45-39 win over Blind Faith.
