Local News in Brief : YMCA to Keep Park Open
- Share via
The downtown YMCA will keep a small park open for public use and expand its outreach programs under an agreement ratified Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council.
In exchange for its cooperation, the Community Redevelopment Agency will pay the YMCA $1 million over the next 10 years for a variety of community programs.
On April 12, the council gave tentative approval for the $1-million payment but conditioned it on the YMCA devising programs for downtown youth. At the time, several members objected that the payment amounted to an improper gift of public funds to a branch of the Y that served many upscale members.
Under the plan approved Wednesday on a 9-3 vote, the Y agreed that for the next 60 years it will open a park and walkway on its property to the public. YMCA officials also agreed to triple the number of children and senior citizens served in its various outreach programs.
