Tutu Asks for Legal Action Against Insults

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu asked police Thursday to prosecute a white man for insulting him during a flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, a spokesman said.
“We will not tolerate threatening and abusive behavior towards the archbishop, who was clearly hurt by the incident,” Tutu’s personal chaplain, the Rev. Christopher Ahrends, said in a statement. He said a passenger, whose name was given to police at the Cape Town airport, taunted Tutu in Afrikaans.
Tutu’s spokesman, John Allen, said later that Tutu is subjected to regular abuse from whites angered by his promotion of anti-apartheid sanctions.
