ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — A 10 1/2-foot alligator that lunged from a lake seized a 4-year-old girl and dragged her to her death, authorities said Sunday, hours after they shot the animal with the girl’s limp body in its jaws.
Game officers spotted the alligator on the bank of Hidden Lake around midnight Saturday carrying the body of Erin Glover. The gator was immediately shot with a .357 magnum, said Stephen Condit, Red Cross disaster services director.
The girl’s body was recovered, and an autospy has been ordered.
The child was walking along the shore of the lake with her brother and a playmate Saturday when the gator bolted from the water.
