Occidental Pair Earn All-American Status

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Two Occidental College athletes earned All-American status on the final day of the NCAA Division III track championships at Carleton College.
Lionel Shan placed seventh in the men’s 1,500 meters with a time of 3:55.64, and Amy Cathcart finished eighth in the women’s 1,500 meters with a 4:35.31 clocking. The top six U. S. citizens in each event are named All-American. Shan and Cathcart were accorded the honor because foreigners competed in their respective events.
Also for Occidental, Louise Coulter finished 12th in the women’s discus with a throw of 130 feet, 2 inches, and Heather Beach placed 19th in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 10 inches.
The Occidental men placed 13th in the team standings, 35 points behind champion Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
The Tiger women placed 40th in a field of 87. Christopher Newport College of Newport News, Va., took the women’s team title.
