Young Home Buyers Might Lower Sights

In “The Affordability Gap” story (May 15), David W. Myers reports housing facts in a way that exaggerates problems and encourages unwarranted discouragement.
Yes, the median price of a California home “at nearly $152,000” may be out of reach for first-time buyers unable to save $30,000.
But, why are young first-time buyers being told to expect an “average” home at age 24 or even 34. We had to work our way up through a series of less desirable and smaller purchases to reach our current address.
There are many livable condos and small homes available at one-half that average price. So let’s stop “demotivating” our young families from the American dream by implying they have to have a “starter” that is as good as Mom and Dad’s home.
