The World : Salvador Candidate Chosen

El Salvador’s rightist National Republican Alliance nominated businessman Alfredo Cristiani as its candidate in next year’s presidential election. Cristiani, president of the opposition party known by its Spanish acronym Arena, was unopposed. Arena founder Roberto D’Aubuisson nominated the U.S.-educated Cristiani, 42, who is from a wealthy coffee-producing family. Political observers believe a divided Christian Democratic Party may lose the presidency next year; President Jose Napoleon Duarte is prohibited by law from running again. The ruling party was dealt a devastating blow March 20, when the opposition won at least 30 of the 60 seats in the National Assembly.
