CLU Runners Reach NAIA Semifinals

Darren Bernard and Susan Bluhm of Cal Lutheran both qualified for the 400-meter semifinals today in the NAIA track and field championships at Azusa Pacific.
Bernard, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, placed third in his qualifying heat in an unofficial 47.06 seconds Thursday. He holds the school record of 47.05 and is the NAIA District 3 champion.
Bluhm placed fourth in the 400 in 58.94. The top five finishers from each of three qualifying heats advanced to the semifinals. The 400 finals will be run Saturday.
Despite clipping more than four seconds off his season-best time, Patrick Byrne failed to qualify for the 3,000 steeplechase final. Byrne, the District 3 champion, placed seventh in qualifying in a personal-record 9:23.26. The top six finishers advanced.
Amy Rico was disqualified in the 200 because of a false start. She holds the school record of 25.99.
