Neo-Nazism is on the rise in West Germany and is becoming ever more violent, Interior Minister Friedrich Zimmermann said. “Numerous discoveries of weapons, ammunition and explosives prove the potential readiness of the militant right-wing extremists to use violence,” Zimmermann told a news conference in Bonn. Federal and state authorities established that in 1987, the number of neo-Nazis rose by over 10% to an estimated 25,200 people, he said, quoting the annual report of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Attacks attributed to neo-Nazis increased to 76 last year from 71 in 1986.
