Iranian gunboats slammed rocket-propelled grenades into a Liberian-registered liquefied gas carrier in the Strait of Hormuz, igniting a small fire. Persian Gulf shipping official identified the vessel as the 12,251-ton Mundogas Rio, which is operated by a Norwegian firm. There were no reports of casualties. Meanwhile, Tehran Radio reported the dispatch of “tumultuous crowds” of volunteers to the war front with Iraq. The action came one day after Iraqi forces drove Iranian troops out of positions near the southern Iraqi city of Basra. In Baghdad, the government-run daily Al Thawra said that Iraq is determined to recapture all of its territory occupied by Iran.
