Tuna, shrimp and codfish topped the charts again in 1987 as the most consumed species of fish and shellfish. According to the National Fisheries Institute, America’s appetite for seafood continued its steady growth, jumping for the fifth year in a row. Since 1982, the per capita consumption has climbed 25%, to 15.4 pounds from 12.32 pounds edible weight. The growth in 1987 was to 15.4 pounds from 14.7. The top 10 species in order of popularity are tuna, shrimp, cod, Alaska pollack, flounder, clams, catfish, salmon, crab and scallops.
