Gonzales to Fight After Year Layoff

Paul Gonzales, a gold medal winner in the 1984 Summer Olympics, takes on Jorge Ortega in the 10-round featured main event of the monthly boxing program tonight at the Irvine Marriott.
Gonzales of Los Angeles won the gold as a light flyweight. He is 7-0 as a professional in four years. He has been bothered by hand injuries and not fought for a year. Ortega of Mexico City is 9-6 but all nine victories are by knock out.
Tommy Perez (17-3) of Santa Ana, a super welterweight, takes on Joey Walker (11-1) of Ohio in the co-main event and Kenji Iizumi of Japan is paired against Ben Lopez of Ontario in a five-round lightweight bout.
There are four other scheduled bouts, the first of which starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. in the grand ball room at the hotel.
