A British soldier and his dog were killed by a bomb as they searched for explosives in Northern Ireland near the border with the Irish Republic, police said. They said it appeared the soldier, identified as Cpl. Derek Hayes, 28, or the dog, which was being used to sniff out explosives, stepped on a bomb hidden in a field about 10 yards from the road. Five people in two passing cars suffered minor injuries in the explosion. The soldier was leading a search patrol for explosives in the county of South Armagh, where a 1,400-pound bomb was discovered Thursday. The outlawed Irish Republican Army claimed responsibility, police said.
