Calabasas High has selected St. Genevieve Coach Dave Hoffman to replace Bill Bellatty as the school’s basketball coach.
Hoffman led St. Genevieve to a 12-10 record, 8-6 in Santa Fe League play this season, his first as coach. Previously he was an assistant at Chaminade.
Hoffman’s replacement has not been announced.
St. Genevieve Athletic Director Lindon Crow said lack of a campus gymnasium at St. Genevieve contributed to Hoffman’s decision to leave.
“He told me about the job and said, ‘Gee, they’ve got three gyms.’ We’ve got three gyms but they’re at three different parks,” Crow said. “He’s a good basketball coach and we’re sorry to lose him.”
Bellatty, 47, will remain as a science and physical education teacher at Calabasas and will continue to coach the golf team. Bellatty, who described his separation from basketball coaching as a one-year sabbatical, cited health considerations for leaving.
“I lost weight and broke out in hives last season because of the stress,” he said. “We’ve left it in the air whether I’ll come back and coach.”
Bellatty coached Calabasas to the playoffs in five consecutive seasons, including last season when the Coyotes lost in the first round.
