NEW YORK — Two sanitation workers found $48,900 in cash in a cardboard box they were throwing away and turned it in to authorities. But the women in whose trash can the bills were found say the money is not theirs.
“As far as I know it’s not ours,” said Marianne Bosted of the two bundles of bills that fell out of a trash can Thursday behind her house in Queens.
“I keep saying to my aunt, ‘Are you sure you weren’t saving this in a box to give to me?’ ” Bosted told the New York Post.
The two Sanitation Department workers who found the cash have insisted on anonymity, said department spokesman Vito Turso.
“I guess everybody has always fantasized about finding a lot of money and what they would do with it,” he said. “These guys found it and did the right thing--they turned it in.”
Police are trying to determine who the money belongs to.
