Blackface and Elegance at Coto de Caza Party

I noted with revulsion that a member of the Orange County elite wore “blackface” to the “elegant” “Gone with the Wind” bash at the Lyons’ Tara replica in Coto de Caza (Ann Conway, LIFE, May 6).

The concept of society takes on a whole new dimension in this overdeveloped subculture presided over by home builders and their narcissistic consorts.

How can it be that the same county in which the Forbaths struggle to keep Share Our Selves (SOS)--aid to the destitute and homeless--afloat, the need to finance our cultural shrines results in the kinds of questionable pursuits as described above?
