Stanley Cup Playoffs : Bruins Overpower Burke to Defeat Devils, 6-1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Boston Bruins finally found a way to beat New Jersey goalie Sean Burke. All they had to do was play their best period of playoff hockey this season.

Ray Bourque triggered a five-goal second period, setting up scores by Ken Linseman, Bob Joyce and Lyndon Byers in a 73-second span, as the Bruins defeated the Devils, 6-1, in Game 3 of their Stanley Cup semifinal series Friday night.

The victory gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead and was the Devils’ third straight loss during the playoffs at the Brendan Byrne Arena, where Game 4 is scheduled Sunday night.

The end of the game was marred by a run-in between Devil coach Jim Schoenfield and referee Don Koharski. Schoenfeld was irate over a series of penalty calls by Koharski late in the first period that gave Boston a 3 1/2-minute manpower advantage at the start of the second period.
