Local News in Brief : Fountain Valley : City Council Votes Itself 90% Pay Raise

The City Council has voted 3 to 2 to give the five members a 90% pay raise, from $262.50 to $500 a month.
In adopting the pay hike--its first in 12 years--the council chose to eliminate its option to be reimbursed for expenses such as mileage and tickets to community organization banquets--costs that have averaged about $50 or $60 a month, city analysts have said.
The ordinance will take effect after the November election. Mayor George Scott and Councilmen Fred Voss and James E. Neal voted for the raise; council members Barbara Brown and Laurann Cook voted against it.
In other action, the council approved a policy that establishes smoking and nonsmoking areas in City Hall.
The policy, unanimously approved Tuesday, also directs the city staff to post signs indicating where smoking is allowed.
